What to Know First
In traditional Feng Shui, the main entrance is considered the "Mouth of Qi" (the gateway of energy), and its facing direction determines the entire house's orientation.
The rule to determine this is very simple: Stand at the exact center of your home, looking directly toward the front door. The direction you are facing is the "Facing Direction", and the direction directly behind you is the "Sitting Direction."

For example, if your front door faces South, your home is a "North-Sitting, South-Facing" house (historically known as a Kan house). The facing direction directly affects how the home receives natural light and energy. Generally, having the door face South, Southeast, or East is considered highly auspicious, as it allows the home to absorb abundant sunlight and vibrant life energy, keeping the entire household full of vitality.
