What to Know First
This traditional feng shui saying comes from the Lu Ban Jing, an old Chinese text on architecture and household customs. It warns that when the front doors of two homes directly face each other, one household may gradually lose ground while the other becomes more dominant.
In feng shui, the front door is considered the main gateway through which energy enters a home. When two doors line up directly, it's believed that their energy competes - almost like two channels fighting over the same stream of water. Traditionally, the larger, taller, or more active entrance is thought to overpower the smaller one, creating what is sometimes called "the big door swallowing the small door."
Watch out
Most importantly, keep things peaceful with your neighbors. Avoid hanging a bagua mirror directly toward their home, since that can feel hostile and may create real-life tension - the exact opposite of what good feng shui is meant to encourage.
More Feng Shui Notes
Another classical feng shui text compares two facing doors to two mouths arguing. Symbolically, this arrangement is associated with tension, gossip, misunderstandings, or conflict between neighbors.
That said, this concern is usually much less significant in modern apartment buildings. Most apartment doors stay closed, and people rarely open both doors at the same time, so the direct flow of energy is limited.
To soften the arrangement, traditional feng shui suggests placing Five Emperor Coins beneath the doorway threshold, hanging a curtain just inside the entrance, or displaying a "Heavenly Official Bestows Blessings" plaque above the door.
