What Is It the Year Of in the Chinese Calendar?
If you are searching for what year it is in the Chinese calendar, the answer depends on the date. The Chinese zodiac year does not begin on January 1, so the animal changes on Chinese New Year rather than at the start of the Western calendar year.
In 2026, the Chinese calendar is in the Year of the Horse. Chinese New Year began on February 17, 2026, and the Year of the Horse continues until February 5, 2027. On February 6, 2027, the Chinese zodiac will change to the Year of the Goat.
This difference is easy to miss. Someone born in January 2027 will still belong to the Year of the Horse, while someone born after February 6, 2027, will belong to the Year of the Goat.
What Is the Current Chinese Zodiac Year?
The current Chinese zodiac year is the Year of the Fire Horse. The Horse is the seventh animal in the twelve-year Chinese zodiac cycle.
The Horse is traditionally connected with freedom, confidence, movement, enthusiasm, independence, and ambition. People born under this sign are often described as energetic and optimistic. They may enjoy new experiences, travel, social activity, and the feeling of moving toward a meaningful goal.
The Fire element adds intensity to the Horse. Fire is associated with passion, courage, creativity, and action. A Fire Horse year can therefore be viewed as a time of strong motivation, bold decisions, and visible personal energy.
That does not mean every person will experience the year in exactly the same way. Traditional Chinese astrology offers symbolic interpretations rather than traditionally associated with predictions. Still, many people enjoy using the zodiac to reflect on their plans, relationships, and hopes for the year ahead.
The Horse does not like standing still for too long.
That idea captures much of the traditional feeling surrounding 2026. It can be a useful year for learning, travel, career changes, creative projects, and decisions that require confidence. At the same time, Horse energy can become impatient, so thoughtful planning remains important.
When Does the Chinese Zodiac Year Change?
The Chinese zodiac year changes on Chinese New Year, also called Lunar New Year or the Spring Festival. The date changes every year because it follows the traditional lunisolar calendar.
In 2026, Chinese New Year falls on February 17. In 2027, it falls on February 6. The 2027 Chinese zodiac year will continue until January 25, 2028, when the Year of the Monkey begins.
This is why birth dates in January and February require extra attention. If your birthday comes before Chinese New Year, your Chinese zodiac animal may belong to the previous year.
For example, a person born on February 1, 2027, will still be born in the Year of the Horse. A person born on February 10, 2027, will be born in the Year of the Goat.
The calendar year printed on a birth certificate is not always enough to determine the correct Chinese zodiac sign.
What Animal Year Is 2027?
The year 2027 will be the Year of the Fire Goat. In some translations, the Goat may also be called the Sheep or Ram. These names refer to the same position in the Chinese zodiac cycle, although different cultures and traditions use different English translations.
The Goat is the eighth animal in the zodiac cycle. It is traditionally associated with kindness, creativity, gentleness, beauty, compassion, and emotional understanding.
After the active energy of the Horse, the Goat year may feel more focused on relationships, home, artistic expression, and inner balance. People may become more interested in creating a peaceful environment and choosing goals that feel personally meaningful.
The Fire element brings warmth and confidence to the Goat. This combination may encourage people to express themselves more openly, develop creative talents, and make changes that support emotional well-being.
For someone planning ahead, 2027 may be a good year to improve personal relationships, decorate or move into a more comfortable home, develop a creative project, or reconsider what success really means.

How to Find Your Chinese Zodiac Animal
To find your Chinese zodiac animal, begin with your complete birth date. Identify the Chinese New Year date for your birth year, then determine whether your birthday came before or after that date.
If your birthday came after Chinese New Year, use the animal assigned to that year. If it came before Chinese New Year, use the animal from the previous zodiac year.
People born in 2026 after February 17 belong to the Year of the Horse. People born before February 17, 2026, belong to the Year of the Snake.
People born in 2027 before February 6 belong to the Year of the Horse. People born from February 6, 2027, through January 25, 2028, belong to the Year of the Goat.
This small calendar detail can completely change the answer, especially for anyone born in January or early February.
The Five Elements and Chinese Calendar Years
Each Chinese zodiac year is also connected with one of five elements, which are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water.
The element adds another layer of traditional meaning. Wood is often linked with growth and creativity. Fire represents passion and action. Earth suggests stability and practicality. Metal is connected with focus and strength. Water symbolizes flexibility and intuition.
The year 2026 is associated with the Fire Horse, while 2027 is associated with the Fire Goat. The same animal and element combination returns only once every sixty years, which creates a longer cycle within Chinese astrology.
