What are the “three things to avoid” during Major Heat?

Major Heat is one of the 24 traditional Chinese solar terms, and it marks one of the hottest times of the year. In traditional Chinese wellness, there are three things people are advised to avoid during this period.

First, don’t overdo the cold stuff.

That means eating too much ice cream, drinking icy beverages all day, sitting directly under the AC for hours, or taking an ice-cold shower right after a workout. Sudden temperature changes can be hard on the body and may leave you with an upset stomach, stiffness, or joint discomfort.

Second, don’t go overboard with supplements or heavy foods.

Hot, humid weather can make digestion feel slower and more sensitive. Loading up on rich foods, herbal tonics, or too many supplements may leave you feeling bloated, tired, and uncomfortable.

Third, try not to lose your temper.

Extreme heat can make people feel restless, impatient, and more easily irritated. Traditional Chinese medicine describes this as excess internal heat affecting the heart and emotions. So during the hottest days of summer, slow down, stay hydrated, get enough rest, and give yourself a moment before reacting.
